A Brief History
Supplement consumption increased in popularity in the mid-twentieth century as doctors, nutritionists, and clinicians began to research the daily nutrients our bodies need. Supplements were synthesized in order to help meet our body’s daily needs.
In the 1970s, agriculture became more modernized, and packaged food products resulted in a dramatic change in people’s diets. People were no longer getting the daily nutrients they needed to properly fuel their bodies.
In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act became law. This act defined supplements as “a product intended to supplement that diet that contains one or more vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, concentrates, metabolites, constituents, or extracts.”
The definition above is helpful for differentiating between different products. For example, green tea on its own is just green tea, while green tea pills are supplements because they contain concentrated minerals.
